No More Generations of Our Youth
I thought: here I am, a high school teaching artist, relating to kids who could very well occupy the classrooms I teach, in an open and unfettered way, unrestricted from the confines of school walls, desks and metal detectors. I made my way darting between kids rocking stop and frisk pins, in light work circles, and in cyphers rapping to beats banged out on park trash...

Dreams With Dirt
When the goal is creating a whole new world, we can see that the capacity of imagination is integral to societal transformation. It is not some vestigal appendage to be cast away at adulthood-but a faculty that must be deeply developed in order to envision new ways to think, feel and be. As they say, you can’t be the leader of a Marxist revolution without having a poetic nature,...

The Last Time I Was Arrested, The Cops Caught Me...
On October 21st I will join Cornel West and Carl Dix in a civil disobedience action targeted at stopping the illegal, unconstitutional ‘Stop and Frisk’ policy by the NYPD. 600,000 stops and frisks per year; 1900 stops per day; 85% of which are black and latino; we’re talking about a policy implemented by the NYPD that deliberately absolves 4th amendment rights from whole...

Troy Davis—Presente!
More than 1,000 people gathered in New York City yesterday for a so-called “Day of Outrage” to commemorate the execution of Georgia death row inmate Troy Davis. Organized through Facebook, the rally began at Union Square, where demonstrators denounced the perceived failures of the justice system.
The rally gave way to an impromptu march through the streets of...
For Troy: The Whole Damn System is Guilty
Stop The Legal Lynching of Troy Davis!
This evening, Troy Davis is to be executed by the state of Georgia. The denial of clemency to Troy Davis, accused of shooting police officer Mark Macphail, is the latest news in this tragedy of the pursuit of American (in)justice. Seven of nine eyewitnesses have recanted their testimonies. Jurors have recanted their sentences. There is no DNA or physical...

A Cypher with Jamel Shabazz
“Back it the day they used to call it droppin’ science…”
Jamel Shabazz holds an impromptu cypher outside of Powerhouse Arena bookstore in Dumbo, Brooklyn. In this clip he talks about the experiences that shaped his seminal book— ‘Back in the Days’. As much as it is a freeze frame of period photography, it’s a haunting look at a time before...

Pelican Bay Hunger Strike, Harlem Speak OUT...
Revolutionary Will
Stan Smith
Greg, of exercisecompassion.blogspot.com
What started as a hunger strike amongst a few prisoners at California’s Pelican Bay Prison has erupted into the largest prison uprising since Attica, some 40 years ago. 6,600 prisoners across 11 state institutions in California have refused meals in solidarity with the hunger strikers at Pelican Bay, who are...
Pedal Power X Gordon Voidwell @ Union Square...
This is what the future of concerts is going to look like. Powered by nothing but a group of party-going volunteer cyclists, the folks over at Pedal Power NYC threw a concert with the homie Gordon Voidwell. His electric sounds fuse socially relevent, supremely satirical, and, albeit racially charged lyrics with downright funky, damn danceable jams....
Chinatown Bus Chronicles X Good Life Tuesdays, DC ...
So-I’ll be the first to admit it: I’m infatuated with riding the Chinatown bus lines, I high tailed it to DC last week - I was invited to speak to a group of high schoolers who are all taking mandarin, and going on a State Department sponsored 6 week learning excursion to China this summer. Hope I didn’t bore them to tears with all my talk about hip hop...
Hi Neighbor Day on Hamilton Terrace - Harlem...
The whole community comes together to celebrate our quaint little Harlemite non-through street. Parents bring sofas and stereos out to the street, children run barefoot to kiddie pools and community gardens; a neighborhood full of artists and neighbors exchange introductions, drinks and ‘hi neighbor day’ treats. The best day of the year for those of us up on...

Whoo. Trae tha Truth pulled guess starts out of the wazoo. Jadakiss & Styles P, Fred the Godson, even the godfather of hip hop DJ Kool Herc. Was good to see the grandfather in good health - even better to see those that followed in his footsteps taking good care of him.

Hip hop culture was bon out of a systematic response to violence. Imagine having the Cross Bronx Expressway literally rip through your neighborhood and displace thousands. You’d have a story to tell.

Hip & Gifted: Lessons From A Past Creative Class
Thursday evening’s panel discussion, Hip Gifted & Black: The Future of the Black Creative Class, led me into some searching for a couple hip, gifted and black folks i’m quite familiar with, Roberta and the late Jamal Mims. I google-tripped across an article from a 1985 issue of Black Enterprise featuring my mom and pop’s jewelry shop, Sun Gallery Goldsmiths.
